Comfort ye my people 위로하라 내 백성을 헨델의 오라토리오 메시아는 3부로 구성된 작품으로 총 53곡에 연주 시간이 2시간 30분 걸리는 대작입니다. 1부는 ‘예언과 탄생’ 2부는 ‘수난과 속죄’ 3부는 ‘부활과 영생’ 이렇게 구성되어 있고 예수 그리스도를 통한 인간 구원의 모든 이야기가 성경의 신, 구약을 총망라한 노래 가사를 통해 표현되고 있습니다. 곡 수가 많은 만큼 작품 전체의 텍스트 분량도 많은데 이 긴 대작의 처음을 여는 첫 가사가 ‘위로하라’는 말로 (Comfort ye my people) 시작이 됩니다. 성경의 여러 곳에 우리 인생은 너무도 연약하고 가련한 존재로 자주 표현되고 있고 그러한 인간의 삶을 곤고하다고 표현하고 있기에 오직 하나님의 자비와 긍휼 인도와 보호가 없으면 스스로 온전히 살아갈 수 없는 존재라는 것을 보여주고 있습니다. 즉 어떤 삶을 살아가는 인생이든 위로가 필요하고 참 위로자 되시는 하나님을 알고 그분을 의지하는 것이야말로 인생 최고의 복이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그렇기에 그러한 인간을 구원하시려는 하나님의 긍휼의 마음을 표현하는 최선의, 최우선의 말로서 ‘위로하라’는 단어는 단어의 실제 뜻과 함께 우리 인간들에게 진정으로 위안이 되는 말씀이 아닌가 하는 생각이 듭니다. 이 말씀은 여호수아 1장과 이사야 41장의 “너는 두려워 말라, 놀라지 말라” 하신 말씀과 시편 42, 43편의 “너는 왜 두려워 하는가?” 하신 말씀과 함께 한없이 연약하고 상한 갈대와 같은 인생들을 위로해 주시는 하나님의 사랑을 가장 잘 드러내는 말씀이라 생각이 됩니다. 또한 이 말씀을 대작 오리토리오의 첫 번째 나오는 단어로 택한 대본가 찰스 제넨스(Charles Jennens1770-1773)의 성경적 지식과 신앙적 통찰력을 느낄 수 있고, ‘위로하라’는 단어인 ‘Comfort’의 첫음절을 몇 번에 걸쳐 긴 음으로 표현함으로 가련한 인생의 영원한 위로자가 되시는 하나님의 마음을 강조하려는 헨델의 천재성과 놀라운 표현력을 접할 수 있습니다. 코로나 위로의 노래(Covid19 Song of Comfort) 시리즈를 만들어 올려드리고 있는 서울모테트 합창단의 유튜브에 담긴 마음도 이와 같은 주님의 마음을 기억하고자 하는 뜻을 담아내고 있습니다. 이야기 둘... 해마다 연말이 되면 우리나라 음악계는 물론 세계적으로도 연중행사처럼 어김없이 반복적으로 늘 공연되는 음악들이 있습니다. 일반 음악에서는 베토벤의 교향곡 9번 ‘합창’이 그 하나이고 교회음악에서는 헨델의 오라토리오 '메시아' 가 바로 또 그 한 작품입니다. 두 작품의 연주 빈도가 하도 높다 보니 사람들 가운데는 “그렇게도 많은 음악들 중에 훌륭한 작품이 얼마나 많은데 왜 늘 ‘합창‘이고 왜 또 ’메시아‘냐” 하며 비판하는 말을 하기도 합니다. 그러나 이 곡들에 담겨있는 음악적인 완성도와 극적인 분위기 뿐만 아니라, 작품의 이면에 담겨진 작곡가의 인생과 고뇌, 그리고 사람들이 많이 좋아할 만한 대중적 매력에 이르기까지, 저는 이 두 작품에는 그럴만한 충분한 이유가 있다고 생각합니다. 기쁨과 감사로 맞는 성탄 분위기와 함께 한 해를 마감하며 갖게 되는 인생에 대한 허무한 감정과, 이를 극복할 수 있는 희망의 메세지를 이처럼 적절하게 담아낼 수 있고 음악적으로도 이렇게 완성도 높으며 무한 감동을 주는 화려한 대작은 거의 찾아보기 힘들다고 생각합니다. 특별히 메시아를 생각할 때면, 은퇴하신 한 목사님께서 몇 년 전 저희 합창단의 메시아 전곡 연주를 들으시고 보내 주셨던 귀한 감동의 메세지를 잊을 수 없습니다. 그 목사님께서 보내 주셨던 메세지의 내용은 이렇습니다. 헨델의 메시아는, 텍스트 내용이 신학에서 예수 그리스도께서 어떤 분이시고 또한 그분의 삶의 족적과 사역의 의미가 무엇인지를 연구하는 기독론(그리스도론) 내용을 완벽하게 정리해 놓은 것과 같다 하시며, 거기에 작곡가의 완벽한 음악적 설명이 더해지고 연주자들의 아름다운 표현력이 더해져 그 어떠한 신학 서적이나 명강의에서도 느낄 수 없는 감동적인 경험을 하시게 되었다는 말씀이었습니다. 그렇습니다. 기독론의 핵심은, 결국 참 신이요 참 인간으로 오신 예수 그리스도를 통하여 인간을 구원하시려는 하나님의 구원의 역사를 드러내는 것이기에 헨델의 메시아야말로 성경 전체를 집대성한 요약본과 같은 것이고, 그러한 작품을 교회력의 특정 절기를 넘어 한 해를 마감하는 특별한 시기에 연주하고 들을 수 있다는 것은 이런저런 합리적 비판을 넘어서는 인류사의 귀한 유산이요, 보배 같은 존재임을 인정하지 않을 수 없습니다. 즉, 전지전능하시고 영원하신 하나님, 영이신 하나님의 하나님 되심을 온전히 드러내고 찬송하는 것이 연약하고 유한한 인생에게 주어진 최고의 목적일진대, 헨델의 메시아와 같은 훌륭한 찬양의 유산을 갖고 있다는 것이 얼마나 감사하고 행복한 일인지 모르겠습니다. 저희 서울모테트합창단은 메시아 전곡 연주를 2회 (1999, 2018) 싱얼롱 연주를 포함한 하이라이트 연주 16회를 포함하여 모두 열여덟 번 연주 한 바 있습니다. 올려 드리는 연주는 2018년 12월 11일, 예술의전당 콘서트홀에서 있었던 창단 30주년 기념 마스터피스 시리즈 전곡연주 실황입니다. 기존 유튜브에 이 연주 영상을 2019년 봄 올려드린 바 있습니다. 그때 급히 올리느라 영상과 음원 모두 예술의전당 측 장비로 촬영 녹음한 것을 아무런 작업 없이 그대로 올렸는데 영상도 아쉬운 점 있었지만, 특히 음원은 더욱 아쉬움이 많았기에 이제 다시 그때 정식으로 녹음한 음원을 입히고 영상과 텍스트 작업도 추가한 것을 올려 드립니다. As i can't find it anywhere on youtube and want to share it with others, i uploaded it myself. It is really great done oratorio, recorded in 1994. I love it becuase of really great sound of men and boy's voices. The Choir of King's College, Cambridge with Stephen Cleobury did it great. Even if i am not religious the sound of voices lifts you up. I am adding also this video for the people who thinks conductor is just a not needed "maniac" waving his stick. 🤍 and an old book 🤍

The Royal Choral Society has performed Handel's Messiah on Good Friday at the Royal Albert Hall every year since 1876. The RCS filmed their performance on 6 April 2012 by kind permission of the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This clip features the glorious Hallelujah Chorus with the choir performing under the baton of their Music Director Richard Cooke.
