Fail Safe is 1964 film by Sidney Lumet, based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler. Screenplay by Walter Bernstein and Peter George. Cinematography by Gerald Hirschfeld. Starring Henry Fonda, Dan O'Herlihy, Walter Matthau, Frank Overton, Fritz Weaver, Edward Binns, Larry Hagman, ... Cold war, a technical malfunction on some American nuclear bombers sends them to launch an attack on Moscow. The US president (Henry Fonda) therefore attempts to communicate with his Russian counterpart to avoid nuclear war at all costs. Time passes and the bombers are still isolated and en route to Moscow. They manage to shoot down some of them but two are still in flight and closer to the Russian capital. At this point the US president finds a dramatic solution to avoid the nuclear apocalypse if the bombers succeed in their target. Communicating with the Soviet leader they decide that if Moscow is destroyed then the president will command other US bombers to destroy New York, thus breaking the chain of retaliation. This is the one role that I'll always remember Dom DeLuise for. It's one of his rare dramatic roles a bit part in Sidney Lumet's 1964 cold war thriller, FAIL-SAFE. His anguished take as the Air Force Sergeant (Collins) ordered to give his Soviet counterparts the technical secrets toward defeating our Hustler bombers on their mistaken bomb run was something very special in a film full of great performances. It was exceptional because, for someone not formally trained, he masterfully conveyed the character's conflict with his struggled delivery of the information while in an impossibly tense situation. When his character is done and sits down, you can clearly see the suffering he'll have to live with from that moment forward. What he does with this small role was nothing short of amazing. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
Description: Directed by Sidney Lumet, this 1964 American film was one of the first Hollywood film to seriously propose that nuclear Armageddon could be brought about by accident. During the Cold War, U.S. bomber jets are equipped with fail-safe boxes that instruct pilots when and if to attack. When an attack order is inadvertently administered due to a system malfunction, the President of the United States works to fix the mistake before the bombs are dropped on Moscow. He manages to stop almost all the bombers headed for Moscow, except for one determined pilot who manages to complete his mission, with deadly consequences. 🤍

It is the confrontation between the hawkish civilian Pentagon advisor, Prof. Groeteschele, and the thoughtful General Black. In the aftermath of the accidental dispatch of a strategic bomber squadron on a run at Moscow, the civilian argues that the U.S. must launch a first strike and attempts to justify it. Black's answer cuts to the matter at hand.

The film follows a crisis caused by a critical error that sends a group of U.S. bombers to destroy Moscow, and the ensuing attempts to stop the bomber group before it can deploy a nuclear first strike. In 2000, the novel was adapted again as a televised play starring George Clooney, Richard Dreyfuss and Noah Wyle, and broadcast live in black and white on CBS. Fail Safe and Dr. Strangelove were both produced in the period after the Cuban Missile Crisis, when people became much more sensitive to the threat of nuclear war. Fail Safe so closely resembled Peter George's novel Red Alert, on which Dr. Strangelove was based, that Dr. Strangelove screenwriter/director Stanley Kubrick and George filed a copyright infringement lawsuit.[5] The case was settled out of court.[6] The result of the settlement was that Columbia Pictures, which had financed and was distributing Dr. Strangelove, also bought Fail Safe, which had been an independently financed production.[7] Kubrick insisted that the studio release his movie first. The Bedford Incident, a 1965 film based on a novel about an engagement between an American destroyer and a Soviet submarine in the North Atlantic. By Dawn's Early Light, a 1990 TV film based on the novel Trinity's Child by William Prochnau, about an accidental nuclear attack on the US and the subsequent desperate attempts to avoid nuclear annihilation.
